What Is Vanguard ASO?
In 1963, Albany resident Sue Yager—then a principal with the New York City Opera—founded Vanguard at the request of Albany Symphony conductor Edgar Curtis. Their first project raised enough money in one year to purchase an acoustical shell that improved the orchestra’s sound projection.
Today Vanguard is a dedicated group of volunteers and music lovers who support the Albany Symphony through:
- Fundraising
- Hands-on volunteer service
- Music education advocacy
- Supporting musicians’ advanced study through scholarships
